I’m back to work after Maternity Leave – Here’s the Reality

Returning to work after maternity leave is not as easy as its looks. It’s an emotional journey filled with guilt, exhaustion, and the ache of missing your baby. You might be at your desk, but your heart is still with your child at home. Many mothers feel overwhelmed, torn between responsibilities, and not having enough time or energy.

But Islam reminds us that motherhood and even our work can be acts of worship. When done with the right intention, every step we take as a working mom is part of our journey to earn Allah’s blessings and pleasure.

Here are a few gentle reminders and practical tips to help you navigate your return to work with more heart and ease:

1. Set your intention – Seek Barakah

Before stepping out the door, take a moment to breathe and make a sincere intention:

“Oh Allah, I work not only to earn a living, but to fulfill my responsibilities and provide halal sustenance for my family. Let this be a means to gain Your pleasure.”

A strong intention helps us stay grounded. It reminds us that we are not just going through the motions of a daily routine, but we are doing something meaningful for the sake of our family and faith.

2. Start your day with Dua and a Hug

Before leaving home, spend a moment hugging your child and recite protective prayers like Al-Fatihah, Ayatul Kursi, or this beautiful dua from the Prophet Muhammad SAW:

Even if your child is too young to understand the words, they will feel the love and serenity you wrap around them. And it’s just as comforting for you, mama.

3. Communicate & Set Flexible Routines

Talk to your spouse about sharing responsibilities and how to ease the load at home. Discuss with your employer if you need time to pump, take short breaks, or adjust your hours slightly.

Remember: You don’t have to do it all alone. Delegate when needed. Pause when you’re tired. A flexible routine helps keep your emotional and mental health in check.

4. Make time for Heart-to-Heart moments

Even if you’re tired after work, carve out 10–15 minutes of distraction-free time with your child. No phones. Just presence.

Tell a short story, snuggle, or ask them how their day was. It’s not about how long you spendwith them , but it’s about how present you are in that moment.

These tiny pockets of connection become the memories your child holds on to forever.

5. The exhaustion is temporary. The Reward is Eternal.

Allah promises in Surah Al-Insyirah, verse 6:

“Indeed, with hardship comes ease.”

Every tear, every tired step you take as a mother returning from work when done is for the sake of Allah, and it will bring immense reward. You are strong because Allah is with you.

Being a working mom isn’t easy, but it’s deeply honorable. You don’t need to be perfect.

You just need to keep showing up—with love, effort, and faith. Be kind to yourself, and take time to care for your own wellbeing too. A calm and nurtured mother is more likely to raise a calm and emotionally secure child.

So to all working moms who are reading this: keep going, keep praying, and keep doing your best. Whether you’re at home or at the office, every step you take for your family matters will  bring you closer to Jannah.
